Six women and one man gather in a community centre in North London for a life writing class run by Dorothy, their uniquely unqualified teacher. They have urgent stories to tell and, as they recount them, they discover they are connected in unexpected ways. There is Iris, eighty years old but still with a taste for younger men; Pearl single-handedly bringing up her grandson, enigmatic hooded Kai; elusive Renee; Sabine whose happy Belgian childhood may not have been as happy as it sounds; mixed-up Esther; Edgar whose winning ways charm them all and of course there is Enid, the retired art teacher, who insists on telling her story in pictures not words. Illustrated with sharp line drawings by illustrator Beatrice Baumgartner-Cohen, The Brondesbury Tapestry is a quirky, perceptive look at a group of people who feel the modern world has left them behind but who have decided that they will still have the last word.

Nick Harris, Helen Harris, Paul Marshall
R512 Discovery Miles 5 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Edward Payson Weston's 3,100-mile walk from California to New York, completed on 3 May 1910, was one of his great achievements, but only one. It took him just 77 days. He was 71 years old. For half a century Weston was one of the most famous people in the English-speaking world, as the first age of international celebrity unfolded. The godfather of the pedestrianism movement, he criss-crossed Britain and America on foot earning fame, fortune and notoriety in an athletic career that saw him complete some of the most amazing endurance feats ever witnessed. In this entertaining and wide-ranging book, co-authors Nick Harris, Helen Harris and Paul Marshall, skillfully recreate a vanished world to tell one of the most amazing stories in sporting history. Part social history, part biography, part exposition of the seedy underbelly of Victorian society, this is a work that draws in elements of sporting genius, high stakes gambling, drug abuse, and marital scandal. A Man in a Hurry is one man's flamboyant athletic journey from the Gold Rush to the Jazz Age, the story of a dreamer, schemer and ladies man who met with Presidents and royalty, crooks and knaves. With its colourful detail, historical context and readable style, this groundbreaking work is an important addition to the sports literature canon.

A happy O'Malley family of four sisters, one brother, father and mother, lived in a row house in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The smallest, youngest, and favorite of all was Doris. However, her life changed dramatically at age eleven, and her family and others were devastated. We were heading to the mall when I realized she was not moving. The ambulance was called and in those days there were no MRI, and little other than x-ray, so at first we didn't know what happened to my little sister. Finally the diagnosis of nephritis was made, and Doris was put on penicillin for one year, but this horrible disease struck again. Soon it was evident that we were in for the long battle; and Doris' lonely, challenging journey began. Prayer, confidence, and an unyielding mother's love brought Doris to a healing. The determined girl then took matters into her own hands. First, off to school for her elementary certificate, followed by a high school diploma. Then, some financial support, she graduated as a licensed vocational nurse. At age of 42, Doris proudly walked across the stage and received her diploma, with perfect attendance. She was now able to go out into the world beaming and independent. Tragically, endometrial cancer crept unrecognized into the single girl's life. It spread to a full blown cancer death, but to the very end, Doris still flashed the V for victory sign... even on her death bed. Together, my little sister and I walked through the dark passages and right into the light as the angels swept her away on November 20, 1992. Read this remarkable, inspiring story of loss, faith, and the fighting spirit of Doris O'Malley.
